Message from our President

The Spanish Speaking Women’s Association was founded in 1977 by a group of Latin American women who wanted to meet on a regular basis to give each other support and encouragement, as well as to ease the integration into a new culture.   Over the years we have grown considerably and we now have members from Latin America, Spain, and other countries but all of us are united by our language.   Not only do we promote our culture by providing educational and recreational activities to our members and their families,  but  also by taking part in the local community, doing social work and promoting our culture among students in Hong Kong.

Despite not having a regular source of income, AMHH periodically organizes special events in order to raise funds.  In this way we have been able to contribute to various local charities, for instance our “Alma de Artista” show and calendars raised HK$ 80,888 for the benefit of the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.  We also raised in the past HK$ 108,000 for the orphanage “Cradle of Hope” in Macau and  we very willingly help charities in other countries, when the need arises, as we have recently done following the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.   We organize two “fiestas” every year and our most recent “Fiesta de Carnaval” in aid of Chile raised over HK$ 70,000 to help rebuild the “Escuela Cardonal” a school for children from a fishing community.

We hold monthly lunches, when our ladies take turns to delight us with a wide variety of delicious food from the various countries.    We have a very active “literacy circle” and we also provide after school Spanish classes for our children in collaboration with the English Schools Foundation.  For the younger children we have a “playgroup”.    Our members are very active in providing support to two local Homes for the Aged, the charity ”Crossroads” and The Cradle of Hope orphanage in Macao.  We organize monthly “cultural activities” and we are also very proud of our Dragon Boat Team “The Latin Dragons” who have participated in the Stanley International Dragon Boat Races since 1986!

All these activities are organized by our Committee members, a group of dedicated volunteers, with the support of our members, and we hope to continue to provide these services for many years to come.
